Urban Sketching – Patterns

Published August 20, 2017 by etain1

Homework for Urban Sketching was to draw buildings and look for patterns. Well this building in down town Flint, Michigan was just what I needed. The design in the upper portion of the building was the first pattern I spotted and knew it was perfect for my 3rd week lesson. The multiple floors with the same windows was another pattern. I really enjoyed stepping out of my comfort zone and trying something new.

I am satisfied with how this sketch turned out. Adding some color made a huge difference.

Sketching

Realism and Naturalism rely mostly on the eye of the flesh. Abstract, conceptual and surrealistic art rely mostly on the eye of the mind. Great works of art rely on the eye of contemplation, the eye of the spirit.

I have learned so much from other artist styles of sketching, adding color, and shading. I look forward to sketching each day and trying something new. I do wish I had someone closer that I could discuss artwork with, but because I don’t the web will have to do.

I need to think about investing in better quality of art supplies.

Wind – Change Is Coming

Published August 20, 2017 by etain1

wind

Drawing prompt was ‘Wind’, so I decided to use some of what I learned in my Urban Sketching class and combined it with the prompt ….. tornado in the city came to mind.

I thought about this picture and I found this saying …….

What screws us up most in life is the picture in our head of how it’s supposed to be. It’s the unexpected that changes our lives.

Change is in the wind. Three and a half years ago a major change took place in my life and it was like a tornado that aimed and destroyed me right to my core. I survived and learned some valuable lessons in the process. Just like the memories of the destruction of a real tornado, I have vivid memories of the storm that swept through my life.

Soon, you learn to rebuild and go on with your life. One thing for sure is that artwork is a wonderful tool for healing.

Drawing On Location

I signed up for a ‘Urban Sketching” art class. First art class ever. So far I am not impressed with what they offer (Sketch Book Skool) but figure I will pick up tips and other useful information.

I drew this picture at the Genesys Cancer Institute where my brother went through chemo treatments. I have never thought of myself as a real artist as I usually find clipart I like and draw from it adding my own spin on it. Well, this is a sketch I did on location and I have to say “I AM AN ARTIST”. I have been looking through my other sketches starting from 2008 when I started doing prompts through Every Day Matters. I have seen a vast improvement and believe me I needed that artistic boost.

I am looking forward to learning more on the ‘on location’ sketching. I need to concentrate on doing my own sketching and relying less on prompts from clipart. I need to get the ideas formulated in my head and then transfer them on paper just as I did with the picture above.

I am a work in progress and I am giving thanks for what I have learned so far.
